The Right Kind of Change

Filmed at Palo Duro Canyon, Texas

“Change” is the watchword of this election, with good reason. The economy is slipping, energy prices are out of sight, and Washington is beset with scandal. But if advocating “change” means only that different people are in charge, and the underlying broken system remains in place, then the word “change” is meaningless.

Senator Cornyn has been an agent for reform throughout his career in public service, starting with his first race to help clean up a “good old boy” network at the Bexar County Courthouse in 1984. As a Texas Supreme Court justice, he helped restore balance and fairness to a court system that had been captured by special interests. As attorney general, he cleaned up a dysfunctional child support system and enforced open government laws. He has continued to challenge the status quo as a U.S. Senator.

In Washington, John Cornyn has maintained strong conservative principles while working with members of both parties to enact reform in Washington. He is widely respected as a leader, and was named as the top Republican on the Senate Ethics Committee. He has pushed numerous measures to advance transparency in government, and eliminate secrecy in earmarks and other Congressional operations.

No matter who is elected President, Senator Cornyn will continue to push across party lines for the right kind of change — based on the values and principles that have made America and Texas great.

A Record of Bipartisan Collaboration

Senator Cornyn has worked across party lines to find common sense solutions to problems facing Texas and America, and to reform the way Washington works. He is determined to reduce the excessive partisan bickering in Washington. Senator Cornyn regularly cooperates across party lines, without compromising his principles, to advance Texas interests.

  • The OPEN Government Act
Senator Cornyn and Senator Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., led the bipartisan effort to enact the most sweeping expansion in decades of the laws guaranteeing citizen access to the workings of their government. The OPEN Government Act, signed into law in 2007, increases transparency and accountability, and combats government secrecy.
  • The Veterans’ Housing Benefits Enhancement Act
Senator John Cornyn and Senator Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, introduced The Veterans’ Housing Benefits Enhancement Act to assist wounded service members and their families.
  • Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Modernization
Senator Cornyn joined Intelligence Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and a bipartisan majority of the Senate in supporting legislation to modernize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The bill provides American intelligence professionals with additional tools to gather critical information to detect and deter terrorists.
